Kunekune Pigs

About Kunekune Pigs

Kunekunes  were named by the Moira  people in New Zealand.  Kunekune stands for “fat and round”. In 1970 they were becoming extinct with only 50 known pigs.  They were brought to the United States in 1995, but were not in the hands of breeders until 2005. There are still only sixteen sow bloodlines and eleven boar bloodlines. Kunekunes are very docile and are easy on farms due to being foragers and don’t tend to root as badly as other breeds. Their snouts are turned up farther than other farm pigs which makes them easier on the ground.
